BRONZE GARDEN TROWEL NO.04
BRONZE GARDEN TROWEL NO.04
Hand forged COLDURA-A Bronze / Copper Ferrule / English Oak handle
Total length - 28cm (handle - 13cm)
Blade - 14cm x 7cm
Inspired by visits to the ruins at Mells Ironworks in Somerset and and by the tools of a by-gone age. Also from a sketch found in the only known catalogue to have been printed in 1884 of James, Isaac & John Fussell Ltd. PLATE 20 - No. 331.
MATERIALS : Silicon Bronze is a wonderful material to use , especially for garden tools as it is made up of mostly copper. Copper traces left in the soil when using bronze tools ionize water, increasing its surface tension. This makes it easier for plants to take up water and enhances the soil's ability to hold it, which is particularly useful in light, sandy soils or during periods of drought.
This material has been used for over 5000 years to make all types of tools and modern bronze still has many of the same properties but the advantage of more strength - Coldura-a actually has the same tensile strength as steel.
FOUNDED IN HISTORY | FORGED IN DORSET
PLEASE NOTE : Each trowel is individually hand forged and as such is unique (and may vary a little from the photo).
The blade and copper ferrule will age over time with use - this is quite natural and something to be embraced . Wash after use and apply oil if unused for a long period of time. The handle should be oiled with Linseed oil at least once a year.
