FORGING A CHEFS KNIFE
For centuries kitchen knives have been hand forged by blacksmiths and in Britain we have always had a strong tradition of steel work and blade making. We would like this tradition to continue - so this course looks at European style chef’s knives, how they are forged and how handles are fitted. A great combination of blacksmithing and woodwork.
This course is for 4 people and aims to explore the long history and tradition of knife making in Europe as well as forging your own chef’s knife to take it home , ready to cook.
DAY 1 : Safety and introduction to blacksmithing. Forging the high carbon steel (80CRV2) to make your knife blade. Grinding the profile and start the heat treating cycles ready for hardening and grinding.
DAY 2 : Learn to basics of heat treating steel heat treating and grinding bevels. Edge grinding. Preparing and fitting the handle and finally sharpening.
You will go home with a beautiful personalised chef’s knife that will last generations.
TIMES : Day 1 : 9am - 5pm : Day 2 : 9am - 5pm
MEALS - A delicious lunch of local produce will be provided on both days, as well as tea and coffee throughout the day.
CAMPING AND ACCOMMODATION - There is camping at COPPET HILL CAMPING (walking distance from the forge) or else plenty of local accommodation available .
